Cabinet refacing is a process that involves removing all of the kitchen cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and moldings from your existing kitchen cabinets. After we remove all of the exterior openings, we prepare and cover these surfaces of the cabinet box (sides, bottom and face-frame) to match the brand new cabinet doors, drawer fronts and moldings.
Then we install brand new kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts, custom-made to fit your kitchen cabinets, and brand-new hardware, pulls, hinges and moldings. You will choose the look and feel of your kitchen by selecting from a wide variety of door styles, as well as new hardware and moldings to suit your taste. So you may select any kitchen cabinet door or color that you desire, whether stained or painted. Therefore, the end result will look like we have torn everything out and installed a brand new kitchen!
Why Choose Midwest Kitchens for Cabinet Refacing?
At Midwest Kitchens, we use only the highest quality kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts made of solid maple, cherry, birch, oak, and other North American hardwoods. Further, we offer a wide selection of custom kitchen cabinet door styles and finishes from Showplace Cabinetry.
All of the hardwoods are stained, sealed, varnished and oven-cured in a controlled manufacturing setting at the Showplace Cabinetry factory in South Dakota. For painted finishes, Showplace Cabinetry applies an additional top-coat, varnish, and oven-curing process for a long-lasting finish. Moreover, we are proud to offer a line of kitchen cabinets from Showplace Cabinetry that are made in the U.S.A. by an employee-owned company.
Is Cabinet Refacing Right for Me?
Refacing kitchen cabinets is an excellent option for kitchen cabinets that are structurally sound but that look worn or dated. The majority of kitchen cabinets that we reface are between 15 – 40 years old. With cabinet refacing, you get to choose the look and feel of your new kitchen without having to completely remodel it, and cabinet refacing is a fraction of the cost of brand new kitchen cabinets.
Therefore, if your existing kitchen cabinet “boxes” are in good shape, but your kitchen cabinet doors are showing wear, or if you are simply unhappy with the color or style of the doors, then refacing kitchen cabinets is right for you.
How Long Does Cabinet Refacing Take to Complete?
We complete most cabinet refacing projects within one week, depending on the size of the kitchen and the scope of the project. However, our customers often choose to make kitchen design modifications and replace countertops, sinks and tile at the same time. When you select Midwest Kitchens for your kitchen project, we guide you through the entire cabinet refacing and kitchen remodeling process. After we determine the scope of the project with you, we will provide a realistic estimate of the completion date for your cabinet refacing project.
Cabinet Refacing or Hiring a Painter for Kitchen Cabinets?
There are many benefits to cabinet refacing versus having your existing kitchen cabinets painted by a local painter. Here is a list of reasons why cabinet refacing is the better long-term choice for your kitchen:
Benefits of Refacing Kitchen Cabinets:
You will select the brand new doors of your choice with matching solid wood drawer fronts. Showplace Cabinetry has a large selection of beautiful door styles from which to choose. You will not be limited by the style of your existing kitchen cabinets.
In the cabinet refacing process, we replace your old hinges with soft-close concealed Blum hinges, which are the best in the industry.
We can also make kitchen cabinet modifications, such as raising an over-the-stove microwave oven higher from the cooking surface or replacing an unused desk with a new custom cabinet. By making cabinet modifications, we maximize your working area to create more efficient use of kitchen space.
Most older kitchens have cheaply made drawer boxes with worn-out glides. We can replace them with new solid wood drawer boxes constructed with dove-tailed joints and installed with Blum soft close full-extension glides. We can also add pull-out shelves.
With cabinet refacing, you will choose brand new paint-grade doors that were intended to be painted, which are sealed, varnished and oven-cured in a controlled environment at the Showplace Cabinetry factory. This results in a durable, smooth finish and feels that simply can’t be duplicated.
Drawbacks of Hiring a Painter for Kitchen Cabinets:
The existing stained oak or ash doors in your home were never intended to be painted! The grain often shows through after the local painter has completed the work.
Locally painted kitchen cabinet doors do not wear well over time. Exposure to water, heat, and contact with food & grease cause the paint to peel and chip, especially around the sink and cooking areas.
For homes with stained kitchen cabinets, it is nearly impossible to match existing stain, as the finish on kitchen cabinets can age with time and change the color. By choosing cabinet refacing, your kitchen will look uniform and brand new with new doors with a factory finish, lasting for years to come.
If you use a local painter for your kitchen cabinets, you may not be able to replace your old exposed hinges. You will also not be able to make kitchen cabinet modifications or install new moldings, and you may be limited in selecting new pulls based on the current pull size on your kitchen cabinets.
How Do I Know Whether to Choose Cabinet Refacing or New Kitchen Cabinets?
Midwest Kitchens offers both kitchen cabinet refacing and brand new kitchen cabinets. So if your kitchen cabinets are over approximately 45 years old, it may be time to replace them with brand new kitchen cabinets. Therefore, when we come out for a consultation, we make an assessment of your existing cabinets and help you decide which option is best for you.
We will always give you our honest opinion, and never attempt to sell you something that you do not need. However, in many cases with kitchen cabinets over 45 years old, replacement may be the best long term option.
How is Midwest Kitchens Different than Other Cabinet Refacing Companies?
Midwest Kitchens is a family owned and operated business, and has been providing expert cabinet refacing and kitchen remodeling services for over 25 years in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Over the years, we have seen other cabinet refacing companies come and go, but Midwest Kitchens remains a consistent leader in cabinet refacing in the Kansas City area. We take pride in our workmanship and never cut corners on your kitchen.
For example, we select our vendors very carefully. We exclusively use the Blum brand of hinges, which are the gold standard in hinges and most durable in the industry. We use Rev-a-Shelf for Lazy Susans, spice inserts, and trash pull-outs. And of course, we are a proud dealer for Showplace Cabinetry, made in the USA.
Further, we do our very best to limit the disruption that a kitchen remodeling project can cause. We protect your existing floors and surfaces and apply plastic around the work area to help contain dust in your home. We also care about your pets and will instruct you on how to keep them safe during the remodeling process.
At Midwest Kitchens, we treat your kitchen with care and respect, as if it were our own. We pride ourselves on completing projects on time and within budget. We deliver on the promises we make and operate the business with honesty with integrity. We also enjoy creating gorgeous new kitchens!

A fantastic group of people to work with from top to bottom. I initially went into my cabinet refacing project with no idea where to begin or what I wanted, but fortunately David was able to help me narrow my selections down to what would look best in my kitchen without having to tear everything apart and re-do everything else. Mike and Gene's craftsmanship in putting everything together and making it look exactly as I had hoped leaves me with no second guessing about doing something completely different. I would happily rehire everyone for my next project without a single doubt in mind.

The MK team approaches every aspect of the refacing process with absolute professionalism and I am delighted with the result. Dave was completely at ease with my lengthy decision-making process and offered many samples (and yet new ones as I changed my mind) as well as great insights based on his experience. The install team, Mike and Gene, are perfectionists, there was no dust in the rest of the house, and each evening they left the kitchen accessible. The install was done in a week and the refaced cabinets are beautiful. MK refaced a different kitchen for me around 2001, which prompted me to call them—I was so pleased to learn that the same team is still working together. They sure delivered the polished results I hoped for.

Work was done on time and with frequent updates as to the status of the project. I really enjoyed working with Midwest Kitchens, and I would absolutely use them again.

I can't say enough good things about this company! They made refacing my kitchen and powder room cabinets easy. Mike and Gene were so meticulous in their work and kept dust from going all over as well as protecting my appliances and floors. They were always on time and worked very hard to get my job done. David helped me pick colors and was so kind and easy to work with from the start. I am so impressed with the beauty of my new cabinets as well as the people who I trusted in my home!

When I first contacted David at Midwest Kitchens, I intended to have our kitchen cabinets refaced. After looking at them, though, he said that they really just needed to be painted and have new hinges. I was able to find a good painter, and, when the cabinets were finished, Mike installed them and replaced the drawer tracks, too. He completed them all quickly and professionally. Mike is a cabinet wizard! In the end this job was a very insignificant one for MIdwest Kitchens, but it meant everything to me. For years I had a kitchen that didn’t work exactly right and didn’t look the way I thought it should. Now it is beautiful and functional, and I am proud of it. Thanks to David for his initial honest advice on what should be done and especially for following through.

I had Midwest Kitchens and a few other companies give me a bid on a total kitchen remodel last spring. Dave came out and spent a lot of time looking at my kitchen and asking questions about my vision. He asked pointed questions about the way I used my kitchen, why I was set on certain things, (double ovens, for example, "because my mother had them" was my response) and suggested alternatives that not only made more sense but also saved me money. He provided samples of cabinetry and gave me lots of options of where to select other things like counter tops, tile and flooring. He returned at least two more times to measure after providing the bid. He knows the neighborhood and the market and I felt like he listened to me and did his best to make sure I got the kitchen I wanted so I signed a contract. I am SO glad I did. From start to finish the project went according to plan and was finished in three weeks, just like David said. Mike was here every day, was professional, hard-working and a meticulous perfectionist. He found and corrected problems that had either been missed or ignored by previous owners and which could easily have turned in to safety issues. He took the time to explain everything he was doing. He was extremely neat and protected my home, appliances and furnishings from noise, dust, and foot traffic by using a back entrance, even though it resulted in many more steps for him. The finished product was much better than I could have imagined. The transformation is stunning and, well, absolutely perfect. On time, on budget and perfect. I could not be happier and would recommend this company and Dave and Mike to anyone who wants a local, family-owned company that is totally honest, very easy to work with, and does amazing work.PS --I took Dave's advice and got a slide-in range--and it has two ovens, plus I got more counter space. 😎

We had MIdwest Kitchens reface our kitchen cupboards and drawers 5+ years ago. It still looks current and up to date. We had them modify a lower cabinet for a beverage cooler. People are so surprised to see this feature since our home is over 20 years old. Mike handled the install of our refacing and his work is impeccable. David was extremely helpful when it came to picking out the counter tops and stain color for our cupboards and drawers. The whole process was easy and stress free. This company stands behind their work. In fact, when David came to see the finished job, he wasn't happy with the way our pantry door closed so he readjusted it himself.( We had not noticed anything needing attention) David and Micheal and all the vendors they work with are top notch, hard working and incredibly nice.

We hired Midwest Kitchens to replace our countertops & backsplash, sink & faucet, in January 2019! The whole process, from David giving us an estimate, choosing materials, through the completed job was a very happy experience. David & Mike we’re both great, from demolition, protecting the wood floors, moving appliances, preparation, installation, and replacing everything. We’re very pleased with the pricing, and the beautiful new granite, tile, sink & faucet. I highly recommend David & Midwest Kitchens!

We used Midwest to do a kitchen upgrade in late 2014. David was great to work with and communicated well throughout the project. He helped us make our "vision" become a reality. Since the work was completed we have gotten many compliments. Highly recommend them.
